Letter to homeowners regarding storm debris

Dear Homeowner:

We understand that the recent flooding event has caused significant damage and disruption to many homes throughout the community. The Township recognizes that residents are working to clean up their properties and dispose of damaged household items.

As cleanup continues, we are seeing significant quantities of mattresses, furniture, appliances, and other large household items being placed at the curb. Please be advised that the Township is not responsible for the removal or disposal of these bulk items unless they specifically meet the regular Township collection requirements. Homeowners are responsible for making appropriate arrangements for the removal of bulk household debris from their properties.

We also want to remind property owners that, because the Township is located in a flood-prone coastal area, certain portions of residential structures below the required flood elevation are subject to specific limitations, as required by FEMA and applicable Township floodplain regulations. Areas below the required elevation cannot be converted or used as habitable living space.

The presence of large quantities of household furnishings or appliances being removed from below-elevation areas may indicate that these areas have been used as living or habitable spaces. As part of the Township’s normal responsibilities following a significant flooding event, properties may be inspected to ensure compliance with applicable floodplain and building regulations.

This notice is intended primarily to provide information and guidance as residents complete the cleanup process. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understand the difficult circumstances many homeowners are facing.

If you have questions regarding the use of areas below the required flood elevation, please contact the Township Construction Office.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
